Upgrade 3: Start Now! or The 31 Year Old CEO

I attended TIME's Deeparay Open House yesterday (our office subscribes to one of their lines). At first mmg malas nak pergi but my boss insisted me to tag along, to do some business networking. The event started at 3.00 pm and I arrived at 3.15 pm. My other office mates only arrived at 4.30 pm ! so I had to wait for them eventhough dah kekenyangan. Fortunately there were some familiar faces & also got to knew some new people.

Before the event, we had a Farewell Lunch for our GM (his last day with our company). We were talking about TIME and Jason addressed TIME's CEO as "that young fella". I was curious so later i went to their website and was shocked to find out that the CEO is very young indeed! Only 31 years old! This was the same position that was previously filled by an ex-CEO of TMNET!

" Afzal Abdul Rahim, a Malaysian aged 31, was appointed as Director & Chief Executive Officer of TIME dotCom Berhad on 7 October 2008. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Electronics, specicalising in Acoustic Wave Theory from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom." - taken from TIME dotCom's website

A few days ago, I also found out that Saiful Nang is now a millionaire, and this was the guy who used to lepak at Rafique's room next door, when we were in MMU. Even Gobala Krishnan (who I know from MMU and is married to a friend of mine, Shiela) has reached his six zeros. Best part of it, these guys are not even 30!.

These are only a few of the MALAYSIANS who have succeeded at an early age. Gone were the days when the benchmark age to be successful was 40. When me & my wife started eightDesigns in July 2008, we realized that more than 90% of the 'Malaysian Online Fashion Shopping' scene was dominated by students or fresh graduates who were mostly still in their early 20's!

Point is, age is now not a factor to succeed in life. No longer do you need to "makan garam" first :). In fact you might already be far left behind! So start now before it's TOO LATE!

Well, okay maybe it's not too late, but you get my point. Yes, Colonel Sanders (read KFC) took more than 50 years before he became utterly successful, but this was more than a half century ago. With the boom of the Internet & IT, things have drastically changed. Though its never too late to start, but starting earlier is always better.

To be successful at a young age is no easy task, as a lot of people are still not used to the idea. For instance, this morning I got a call from my wife. She was very furious that the contractor, Interior Desginer & management of KBTC were not taking her seriously. They treated her as if she's so naive and knew nothing. They gave ridiculous & selfish so-called "recommendations" which clearly had "personal agenda" smelling all over. Truth is, this is something she has to deal with everyday. Weighing only 42 kg, and standing only 153 cm short tall, no wonder she get's remarks like "Hai, baru balik sekolah ke dik?" :P.

BTW, KBTC stands for 'Kota Bharu Trade Center", a new shopping mall where we plan to open an eightDesigns outlet there.

p.s.: I wonder what has happened of Dato' Baharum Salleh, former CEO of TIME & TM Net. Googling surprisingly didn't give much information. It seems that even his resignation from TIME went quietly under the weather.
